At any given time my home contains a vampire crab, a colony of cherry shrimp, a red-eared slider, a Russian tortoise, crayfish, a green parrot, and a tank of fish. The list changes. The habit doesn't. Keeping this many species at once is an exercise in something engineers would recognise immediately: every animal has different tolerances, and the constraints interact. Water parameters that suit shrimp will not suit a slider. A crayfish will treat a shrimp colony as a buffet if you let the two meet. The parrot needs stimulation on a completely different timescale from a tortoise, who mostly needs to be left alone and not stepped on. Getting it right means understanding each system on its own terms and then finding the arrangement where none of them break each other. That's not a metaphor I went looking for. It's just what the work is. Why it's the same interest as everything else. I collect animal facts the way other people collect anything — compulsively, and with no plan for what to do with them. Vampire crabs are barely a decade into being properly described and nobody's entirely certain of their full wild range. Cherry shrimp will change colour depending on what's under them. Russian tortoises dig burrows and then just disappear for weeks. Parrots solve problems that shouldn't be solvable by something that size. The last one is the interesting one. What pulls me in isn't cuteness — it's watching things solve problems that nobody designed a solution for. An animal navigating an environment it was never explicitly taught to navigate is doing something computationally remarkable with no access to a computer. That's the same interest that pulls me toward bio-inspired computing. Ant colonies find efficient paths without a central planner. Immune systems classify threats they've never encountered. Natural systems are full of solutions that arrived through pressure rather than design, and most of them are better than what we'd have engineered deliberately. Keeping animals is where that curiosity started. It's still where I go to be reminded that good solutions usually already exist somewhere, in a form nobody's thought to borrow yet.
